A $10 Dollar Crying Shame

The family had just moved into the apartment about ten days earlier. For whatever reason, the electricity had not been turned on and candles were being used for light. Investigators said one of the candles probably started the fire next to a closet and a cardboard box of clothes not yet unpacked. As it burned away the cardboard and the closet door, a pile of clothes fell on the candle reducing the fire to a smoldering pile of heat quietly filing the apartment with smoke. Smoke that should have been discerned by a ten dollar smoke detector and made this just another bedroom fire.
