Gas Shale and Coal Bed Methan Project - Important factors to establish commerciality of it

What are the important factors to evaluate in a CBM project?

Any CBM project needs a pilot in order to be able to evaluate its economic potential and technical challenges to solve.

There is a need to evaluate the resource, take into account the coal thickness and gas content. Get a thorough understanding of the rock properties such as permeability is of upmost importance.

When it comes to production methods, it is important to establish what water production rates are to be expected, and hence what are the optimal drilling methods. In the end there is a need to establish at an early stage what the optimal completion methods are.

The stages of a Coal Bed Metane Exploitation effort are;

• Resource Definition
• Resource Assessment
• Pilot Phase
• Development Phase
• Production Phase

 

Resource Definition

A thorough work through of existing data sets that can be surface maps, logs, cores, surveys and more. Establishing where the coal is through a paleogeographic reconstruction and its depths. Then it remains to estimate the coal thickness. Ultimately there is a need to understand production parameters or at least estimates of SFC per ton.

The thickness of coals can best be established with density logs combined with any coal mining exploration data. Using analogues from existing coal bed methane projects could serve as an indicator. Best source for establishing the coal net thickness is density-neutron logs.

Electric logs and sample logs together with Gamma Ray and sonic logs provide non-reliable coal thicknesses. If these log data are used together with density logs, they can have limited value.

Scenarios of drilling problems have to be established upfront together with any potential completion problems.

Disposal of water is an issue to be addressed at this stage, in order to comply with environmental regulations as well as space requirements and construction facilities.

The resource can range from non-existent to exceeding the minimum requirements for economic resources.  Parameters establishing this are, net thickness, water permeability, gas content, production water rates and isotherm curves. Plotting all these variables together in a pentagram makes it possible to establish the resource potential.

Resource Assessment

Test wells

In order to establish project economics and to create a solid foundation for the project strategies, there is a need to determine how many test wells are needed in the project.  Test wells could be stratigraphic tests or part of the pilot project. It is needed to establish a clear objective of each test well and measurable for each one of them. This is done in order to answer critical economic questions as well as technical ones. When drilling test wells, it is important to establish data collection program for each one of them. The technical as well as economical value added for the data collection has to be justified.

Test wells should determine the depth and thickness of coals seams present in the area and should also answer questions about projected quantity of gas in the coal, depth and thickness of coals seams present.

From a pure technical and production perspective the test well should determine the permeability to give estimates of quantity of gas in the coal and its productivity levels to be anticipated.

Whether to drill one or more test wells, have to be controlled by how uniform the shales are to be expected throughout the project area, and whether the coal seams are assumed to have same quality/facies throughout the area. If not, then there is a need to drill more than one test well, and to establish the variability of the coal seams.

Drilling methods

It is imperative to establish the drilling methods to be used in the project, and this will be partly governed by data collected described in previous sections here.

Air drilling has less damage and enables real time DST, however can have completion problems.

Mud drilling could cause damage to the coal cleats, but there is higher hole stability than air drilling.

Coring methods

Coring methods in project has to be decided from multiple perspectives, as project economy is govern by the resource size, and costs to produce the resources.

Conventional coring gives the most accurate and optimal opportunity for data sampling to establish accurate productivity measures and geotechnical understanding of the shales to be produced from. However it is the most costly and time consuming one.

Continuous coring is the luxury option of coring, however, if shallow shales are expected and no information is available before drilling, it may be the only way to properly establish geology and create a tie to any other data available in project (such as seismic, grav mag data etc).

Sidewall coring provide spot sample, small but cost effective way of collecting data. However, technical stability of core guns and time it takes to rig up and down for this operation can be counterproductive given the quality and amount of samples possible to get through this method.

Drill samples is the most cost effective way of sampling well data, however contamination and the quality of these samples can eliminate some critical analysis options at a later stage to establish f.inst productivity potential and quality of shales (TOC level and maturity etc).

Gas detection

Detecting gas is important through drilling of the well. This in order to create optimal strategy while drilling and potential coring or logging of well.

Mudlogging is the oldest and most traditional way of collecting data samples. However, limited data as well as delay of data coming up to surface may not provide adequate time for decisions. However, seen from a cost perspective the most effective one.

Desoption data lilke lost gas, desorbed gas and residual gas sampling is more and more common and provide the operator with more accurate and timely data to analyse while drilling. The last way is to measure adsorption.

Define lost gas while coring depends on the coring methods used and the lsot calculation related to permeability of coal is unknown.

Desobed gas is measured by coal placed in a sealed container and gas is drained off over time. This determines the desorption curve (scf/ton over time) which is related to the permeability of the coal. Length of time varies with every coal and could have seasonal changes as well. The amount of quick gas as well as gas composition also affect the desorbtion level.

Storage capacity

Coal analysis can either be proximate or ultimate estimates can be done.

One key parameter which will establish the economy of the project is the SCF per Ton (Standard Cubic Feet). This can be established either through lost gas, desorbed gas or a proximate analysis and finally an adsorption analysis. The first three methods we have described upfront.

As for the adsorption, its purpose it to determine how much gas can actually be adsorbed in the coal.

The gas composition is important here, and it helps to determine point of gas production during the dewatering phase as well. The results of the analysis will create a Langmuir curve which will indicate the TCF/Ton for the rock. This estimate is however, assumed to be optimistic. The Langmuir Curve describes the Methane storage capacity (scf/ton) versus pressure and will describe the critical desorption pressure and the curve will flat line to give the methane storage capacity. The initial gas content minus the abandonment pressure will give the gas recovery from the rock.

Production rate

Permeability testing of the rock could be done with injection fall-off procedures below the frac gradient. This will give the permeability to water for the zone investigated.  The investigation obviously has limitations when it comes to depth of investigation from the bore-hole. However, the method assists in defining the completion methods to use and to predict production rates. Investigating the pressure change together with the pressure derivative will establish the range of permeability in the rock.

DST will of course establish the production rate and plateau and how persistent the production rate is versus the continuity of the rock in question.

Other geological investigations that will assist in understanding the resource assessment of the project could be;

Clay mineralogy

Maceral Composition

Vitrinite reflectance

Additional logs like Dual induction, sonic and micrologs.

The objective of a pilot project would be to establish water production rates, water chemistry, potential gas production rates, and determine optimal well spacing within prospect area.

It would therefore be important to answer if all these goals could be achieved with a single well, 2-4, 5 or multiple well pilot projects?

Well program

Establishment of drilling and completion methods has to be taken upfront as well.

All these factors are governed by the maturity level of the basin and/or region in question. The more mature, the less wells and less of a sampling program of course. The cost becomes less the more mature basin and less of a well and sampling program. The flip side of the coin is that less data may not provide any reservoir data – or at least not sufficient data.

There are several completion types to choose from;

Open and cased hole versions, with the options of natural, under-ream, frac with water, frac with water and sand and finally frac which is cross-linked with gel and sand. Then there is of course the option of vertical versus horizontal or deviated wells.

Water disposal issues could be challenging in a project and needs to be thoroughly investigated and analyzed in a project of this kind.

Understanding the water chemistry and gas composition is imperative to understand the environmental impact as well as treatment plants needed on the surface.

Establishing the production volumes to design the plant capacity is imperative.

How to dispose the water on the surface to comply with environmental regulations and not to affect groundwater sources if re-injected. If disposal is done underground it is important to analyze the depth of the disposal zone and what rate of injection this zone would be able to accommodate.

Unconventional Shale gas and Coal Bed Methane evaluation to be done is;

Coal Geological Services (core point picks, structure and isopach maps, mudlogging, etc.)

Gas desorption from full core, sidewall plugs, or chips in the field and laboratory

Estimation of total gas in Scf per ton from mechanical logs or mudlogs

Cleat and fracture analysis with core photographs

Analysis of desorbed gas for C1-C7, CO2, CO, N2, and O2

Bulk density, maceral content, ultimate and proximate analysis, and vitrinite reflectance

Adsorption isotherm generation

X-Ray imaging and x-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning
