Safety Begins before you buy your fireplace

As an example ventless or vent free fireplaces are not approved in Canada. Where and how you install your fireplace could also be a safety issue if not done correctly.
 
Safety issues you should be aware of:
• Before you operate your fireplace for the first time, have it inspected and carefully read the owners manual.
• Clean away any dust or debris that may have accumulated during construction i.e. wood chips or drywall dust may harm the motor, burners or the fan.
• Wait 5 minutes before attempting to light the pilot light if it goes out.
• Be aware of any unusual odors, or if the flames appear unusual.
• Make sure your fire detector is operating properly and also consider installing a carbon monoxide detector near your fireplace.
• Keep children from getting to close to the fireplace when it is being used.
• Before cleaning or wiping down the fireplace ensure that it has completely cooled off.
• Any maintenance on either the venting system or firebox should be done by a qualified professional (Gas Safe Registered).
• Regularly check the outside area around the vent to make sure there is no build up of debris.
If you suspect anything is wrong with the way your fireplace is operating it is best to act quickly and contact the gas company (Gss Safe Registered) or your supplier and have it looked at immediately.

 Open fires and wood burners with the fire service issuing warnings over the dangers of chimney fires.

Have your chimney swept at least once a year – and at least twice a year if you burn wood.

If you have recently opened up and started to use a fireplace, make sure it is inspected by a qualified person.

O When burning wood, use only dry, seasoned woods.

O Build smaller, hotter fires that burn more completely and produce less smoke.

O Never burn cardboard boxes or waste paper.

O Do not overload the grate or appliance.

O Use a fire or spark guard to prevent accidental fires.

O Inspect your chimney breast, particularly in the roof space. Make sure that it is sound and that the sparks or fumes cannot escape through cracks or broken bricks.

O Consider having a carbon monoxide detector fitted.

O Extinguish the fire before going to bed or leaving the house.

O Ensure wood burners are installed and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

O Make sure the appliance receives enough air to allow the fuel to burn properly.
